Abstract. Development of efficient strategies to control potato blight requires information on the pathogen population structure and changes in it. This study analyzes phenotypic changes occurred in the Phytophthora infestans population of Moscow region (one of the main potato-growing regions of Russia) within a period of 2009–2017. The studied P. infestans isolates (n = 450) were isolated from samples, collected from the leaves of potato (n = 260) and tomato (n = 190) plants, grown on commercial fields and private plots of Moscow region. All isolates were characterized by the mating type, the composition of the virulence genes, and also the sensitivity to metalaxyl, for which Ridomil preparation was used in three concentrations (1, 10 and 100 ppm by the active ingredient). During the studied period, both subpopulations included isolates of both A1 and A2 mating types that provided the possibility of a sexual process and formation of various genotypes. The A1 mating type prevailed in “potato” isolates, whereas A2 type dominated in “tomato” isolates. The population was dominated by isolates sensitive to metalaxyl (sporulation was absent at a concentration of 1 ppm): 94.8 and 82.9%, respectively, in the “tomato” and “potato” subpopulations, which indicates a competent strategy for the application of the fungicides of this class in the region. Analysis of virulence showed the increase in the presence of the virulence gene 9 in the population (more than 10% in both subpopulations). In the case of the “potato” subpopulation, a tendency to the reduction of the presence of the virulence gene 4 was observed. Excepting 2014, all eleven virulence genes continuously presented in the “potato” subpopulation. The “tomato” subpopulation was presented by more simple races than the “potato” one; virulence factors of the subpopulations were equal to 5.1 and 8.6, respectively. Both subpopulations notably differ in their virulence profile and the ratio of mating types that may indicate a limited exchange of genetic material between them.
