Abstract. The paper presents the results of studying varieties and hybrids of oats of various ecological and geographical origins from the VIR collection under conditions of the north of the Tomsk Region. The purpose of the study was to identify sources of economically valuable traits for use in the breeding process. The work was conducted in 2014–2016. The soil of the experimental plot was sod-podzolic sabulous. Humus content (according to Tyurin) did not exceed 2%. Nitrate nitrogen provision, which was determined using phenoldisulfonic acid method, was low (0.20–0.22 mg/100 g); exchange potassium provision (according to Peive) was average (8.3–13.9 mg/100 g); mobile phosphorus provision (according to Kirsanov) was high (12.1–18.1 mg/100 g); pH(salt) was 4.3–4.5; the aluminium content (according to Sokolov) was high (4.4–9.6 mg/100 g). The material for the study was 18 oat samples, including 15 chaffy and 3 huskless ones. The standard was the regional variety Narymsky 943. The plot area was 0.75 m2. The seeding rate was 600 grains per 1 m2. The following sources of economically valuable traits were identified: for early ripeness – K-15190 Kanton (Germany), K-15249 Mestny (Tunisia), K-15264 PA 7967-11690 (USA), K-15267 Ino 9201 (USA) with a growing season 7 days less than the standard; for productivity – K-15190 Kanton (Germany) – 203 g/m2 more than the standard; for large grain – K-15278 23h2201 (Russia) with a weight of 1000 grains 5.6 g more than the standard; for husk content – K-15246 Sacavem (Portugal); K-15255 A.C. Juniper (Canada); K-15279 50h2035 (Russia); K-15237 Anak (Sweden); K-15240 Doron (Great Britain); K-15148 Kuerle (China); K-15272 Trucker (USA). A rare combination of early ripeness and high productivity was registered in Kanton variety from Germany (K-15190). They amounted to 62 days and 518 g/m2, respectively.
