Summary. This study was conducted to evaluate the new approaches in creation and activities of large-scale beef cattle enterprise, including cattle housing without buildings, new reproductive technologies and intensive grazing. At the present time Bryansk Meat Company has almost 260 000 head of Angus cattle, including more than 105 000 cows. All cattle are located at 40 cow-calf farms and open feedlot with capacity of 45 000 head. High-productive cultivated and natural pastures (0.7 and 0.5 hectares per a cow with a calf, respectively) provide enough feed for all cattle during the pasture season. Reproductive and productive efficiencies were on high enough level and acceptable for investment phase of the project. Thus, in the last three years the average pregnancy rates was from 80.5 to 89.3 % for heifers and from 83.0 to 90.4 % for cows. The main traits were above average ones for Angus cattle population in the Russian Federation: weaning rates 80.9…90.6 % vs 78.4…81.4 %; weaning weight 242 kg vs 223 kg for the second calved cows; young replacement animals were heavier by 15 to 20.9 % for bulls and by 14.1 to 18.9 % for heifers. Fattening performance of steers consists of about 1.5 kg/d and was comparative with the feedlots of USA, Canada and other countries. These figures and high survival rate (≥ 98 %) of cattle give us the base to conclude that technological and management decisions realized in Bryansk are very effective and ready to wide-scale application.
Keywords: innovation, beef cattle, Angus breed, reproduction, productivity.
