Abstract. Composting or solid phase microbiological fermentation is the main way of waste processing into an organic fertilizer in the countries with the temperate and cold climates. The special machine, pile agitator with the rotary drums as a work tool, is used for the pile conditioning during composting. The manure conditioning makes up 24 % of total energy consumption. The aim of the research was to reduce the energy consumption for the manure conditioning by the justification of the optimal design-mode parameters of the machine work tool. The mathematical models of interaction between the work tool and composed material, and machine energy consumption were developed to achieve the goal. The limits of the angular velocity of the machine drums-shredders are 29.4 to 52.7 1/s that provides interaction of the drums. The optimal value of the angular velocity of the drum-accelerator is 73.0 1/s, thus achieving the highest rise of the particles on the height of 0.45 m above its horizontal axis, with the desired height of the formed pile to be determined by the number of drums-shredders. Total energy consumption of the machine is distributed unevenly between the drums: the first drum makes up 47 % of the total drive capacity that involves a high energy process of separation of the material portions from the pile. The minimum machine energy consumption, 794 J/kg, is achieved by the optimal angular velocity of the lower drum-shredder with 46.7 1/s upon the forward speed of the unit being 0.26 m/s. The rational value of the angular velocity of the remaining drums-shredders is selected within the range from 46.7 to 52.7 1/s. The machine performance is determined by the specific performance of the first drum and is 9.2 kg/s/1 m of the machine width.
