Abstract. The two-row rotary crusher of the tops of root crops of a rope type “BIR-2”, made in OOO “Agrokhimmash”, is intended for the pre-harvest removal of the tops of carrots. It is proposed to use it together with a digging machine in the aggregate with a 1.4kN traction tractor with front and rear suspension gears. In this case, the haulm shredder is hung on the front hinge of the energy source, and the working bodies are driven into rotation by means of hydraulic motors, which allows the two devices to be operated independently. In the soil channel of Kazan State Agrarian University, the laboratory studies were carried out on the effect of the rotational speed, type, and diameter of the cross-section of the working element on the amplitude of their oscillations. In the experiments, three types of working elements were used: a rubberized metal cable, a rubber-fabric element (a fan belt of a combine engine), a line. The preliminary approbation of working elements was carried out at the removal of tops of carrots. At this stage of the experiments, the rotation speed of the working organ was 700 min-1, the travel speed was 2.5 m/s. Later, for the experiments, plasticine pins were made, with the use of which the lower and upper points of contact of the working element can be determined with the necessary accuracy, which in turn allows one to take into account the amplitude of transverse oscillations as a difference between these points. The rotational speed of the working elements (rubberized metal cable) at this stage varied within 500–900 min-1, the cross-sectional diameter varied from 5 to 7 mm. Based on the results of these tests, the optimal diameter of the working element was determined to be 5.5 mm and the required cutting height of the tops of carrot in accordance with agrotechnical requirements, which is 0–20 mm with a working element rotation speed of 800 min-1. Based on the results of testing the developed unit under production conditions, which were carried out in OAO “Kyrlai” of the Republic of Tatarstan, the rational speed of the machine was chosen, which was 3.3 m/s.
