Abstract. During the last years, the output of cardboard and paper of different types considerably increased, at the same time, the amount of colloidal impurity in economic and sewage raised. It caused the broad development of technologies for starch modification for the paper industry, including production of cationic starch (CSt). The advantage of CSt is a considerable effect when gluing paper pulp, improvement of standard sheet quality, higher biological and physical degradability of the utilized paper. The purpose of our research was to search processing methods for improvement of functional properties of CSt. To achieve this purpose it was introduced a cross-binding with the use of multipurpose reagents, such as sodium salt of trimetaphosphoric acid (TMP) and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) in the mass ratio 99:1. The introduction of cross-links into the starch during its cationization increased the molecular weight of the starch and formed an additional charge in it. It enabled to unify the use of CSt for the processing of paper compositions with a wide range of additives and fillers. The effectiveness of CSt depends on the characteristics of the structure and quality of the components of the paper pulp (cellulose fibers, additives of chalk and kaolin). Pastes from the sewed CSt showed a pseudo-plastic nature of flow of compositions and differed by more effective viscosity at the mix TMP:TPP consumption from 0.01 to 0.1% to the mass of dry matter of the starch. At the same time, in the fillers (chalk and kaolin), despite negative charges of them and cross-linked CSt, adsorption properties increased by 15–20%, which contributed to the reduction of CSt losses in wastewater. The addition of CSt, crosslinked using 0.01% mixture of TMF:TPF, to the paper pulp increased the retention of cellulose fiber with a decrease in the density of drains during the formation of a paper sheet.
