Abstract. The purpose of the research was to screen the source material of broad-eared wheatgrass to determine its economically useful features for further use in breeding. The work was carried out in 2011–2018 in the southern forest-steppe of the Republic of Bashkortostan. The objects of the study were 9 genotypes: Batyr, Kazakhstansky 2, Jubileyny 30, Brodsky Shirokokolosy, Pavlovsky 12, Ongudaysky, Donetsky Shirokokolosy varieties, samples 36266 and 33394. Eight of them belonged to Agropyron pectiniforme species; one of them (Ongudaysky variety) belonged to Agropyron cristatum species. The soils were medium and heavy loamy chernozems. Vegetation seasons of 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 were distinguished by drought conditions. In 2015, the amount of precipitation amounted to 85.4% of the norm, the air temperature was 2.3 C higher than the annual average one. The season of 2017 was characterized by excess moisture; the average daily air temperature was below the norm by 4.2 С. In 2018, the average air temperature was below the norm by 1.8 C. Good leaf coverage (33.7–40.0%) was registered in Batyr, Brodsky Shirokokolosny, Donetsky Shirokokolosny varieties and in sample 36266. The correlation between the height of the grass stand and productivity was r = 0.78. Brodsky Shirokokolosny, Pavlovsky 12, Batyr, Donetsky Shirokokolosny varieties as well as samples 36266 and 33394 were selected according to the plant height (69.6–84.3 cm). The seed production of broad-eared wheatgrass depended on ear width (r = 0.63). According to the value of this indicator the best (1.6–2.0 cm) were Brodsky Shirokokolosny, Pavlovsky 12, Batyr, 36266, Donetsky Shirokokolosny, and Ongudaysky samples. The highest yield of green mass was registered in Batyr (19.8 t/ha) and Brodsky Shirokokolosny (18.95 t/ha) varieties, and sample 36266 (19.10 t/ha). In them, it was more than the average one in the experiment by 4.50 t/ha, 3.62 t/ha, and 3.77 t/ha, respectively. The maximum seed productivity in the experiment was registered in the same samples: Batyr (0.77 t/ha), Brodsky Shirokokolosny (0.719 t/ha), 36266 (0.618 t/ha), and Ongudaysky (0.632 t/ha).
