Abstract. Biologically active preparations and energy feed additives are used to maintain the health of productive animals. The purpose of our research was to justify theoretically and empirically the use of succinic acid for potentiating the metabolic activity of fat like energy drinks based on propylene glycol and glycerol. Energy and metabolic compounds were tested via experimental and research-and-production tests in February-May 2017. Experiments involved high-producing third-lactation milk cows having pronounced signs of pathobiochemical processes with an unfavourable prognosis in terms of fatty hepatosis and ketoacidosis. Experimental animals were fed by propylene glycol and glycerin in monoform, a combination of these substances with succinic acid, as well as a solution of succinic acid. In comparison with monoform compounds, compositions based on propylene glycol or glycerol with succinic acid provided a well-pronounced correction of pathobiochemical processes in cows. Under the conditions of an intensively proceeding endogenous lipolysis and the formation of an increased amount of keto acids, the use of the energy-metabolic compositions under study ensured both the normalization of the acid-base balance with an increase in the reserve alkalinity from 15–16 to 22.36–22.54 mmol/L on the 30th day and the activation of energy metabolism with an increase in glucose levels from 2.0 to 2.8–2.9 mmol/L. At the same time, the content of ketone bodies in the blood of cows fed with the energy-metabolic compounds under study decreased from 1.9 to 1.1 mmol/L. Consequently, a pronounced correction of pathobiochemical processes was observed, with the most problematic energy substrates of lipids and keto acids being actively involved in energy metabolism. This allowed the retirement of cows to be reduced 2–3 times (from 34.2% to 9.0–15.1%) and their reproductive ability to be increased.
