Abstract. The purpose of the research was to study the reaction of spring barley varieties to various seeding rates and levels of nitrogen nutrition in the leached chernozems of the Altai Ob region. A three-factor field experiment was conducted in 2018–2019. The experimental design involved the study of four varieties of spring barley (factor A – Aley, Altaysky 10, Vorsinsky 2, Salair); three seeding rates (factor B – 3, 4, and 5 million germinating seeds per 1 ha) and three backgrounds of nitrogen fertilizers (factor C – 0, 30 and 45 kg of primary nutrient per hectare). The forecrop was spring wheat. The use of mineral fertilizers contributed to a significant increase in the number of plants before harvesting (by 30 pcs/m2) and greater plant viability, relative to the control. The application of N45 increased productive tillering by 0.3 units on average compared with the option without fertilizers. The use of N30 and N45 for varieties provided a significant, relative to the control, the average increase in the yield by 0.47 and 0.59 t/ha, respectively. The maximum responsiveness in the experiment was observed for Altaysky 10 variety. A decrease in the seeding rate contributed to an increase in productive bushiness; it was greatest in the option with sowing 3 million germinating seeds per 1 ha – 2.66. The viability of plants by harvesting also revealed the advantage of options with a lower rate. Without nitrogen fertilizers, an increase in seeding rate led to an increase in the yield of all the varieties, and when they were used for the varieties Aley and Altaysky 10, an equal yield was observed at sowing rates of 4 and 5 million germinating grains per 1 ha. On average, Altaysky 10 variety provided the highest yield – 5.53 t/ha with a maximum of 6.02 t/ha against the background of N45.
