Abstract. The research aimed to evaluate winter durum wheat varieties under the conditions of the Central Black Earth region with the allocation of sources of economically valuable traits and properties for further breeding work. The work was carried out in the Kursk region in 2019-2021. The soil of the experimental plot was a typical chernozem. The material for the study was the varieties of winter durum wheat Jubiljarka, Oniks, Kristella, Agat Donskoj, Zoloto Dona, Krupinka. The experiment was laid on a black fallow. The studied varieties are able to form consistently high yields (from 53.3 to 60.0 c/ha), weight of 1000 grains (from 41.3 to 51.7 g), productive bushiness (3.3-4.3), number of grains in an ear (39-42 pcs.). The results of the research were mainly influenced by weather conditions during the overwintering period of plants and for the entire growing season. The most winter-hardy varieties were Agat Donskoj, Oniks and Jubiljarka (88.3%). For three years of research, the yield of winter durum wheat in the nursery of competitive variety testing varied from 39.0 to 74.0 c/ha, the average group was 56.9 c/ha. The maximum yield in the experiment of 74.0 c/ha was formed by the Zoloto Dona variety in 2020. The Agat Donskoj variety (25.6%) was distinguished by the content of raw gluten. The amount of protein in the grain averaged 13.7-15.0%, the highest values of this indicator were observed in the Kristella variety. The studied varieties have a high potential for further breeding work as genetic sources to increase the level of productivity and quality of new varieties.
