Abstract. The research aimed to study the reaction of oat varieties to changes in sowing dates and seeding rates and to select optimal agrotechnical methods for obtaining high-quality grain. The work was performed in the Tyumen region in 2016–2018. The experimental design provided for the study of the following treatment: variety (factor A) – Talisman, Otrada, Foma, Tyumensky Golozerny; sowing time (factor B) – early (I – 15–18 May), medium (II – 25–26 May), and late (III – 1–3 June); and seeding rate (factor C) – 4.5, 5.5, and 6.5 million germinating seeds per hectare. The soil was grey forest heavy loamy. The forecrop was spring wheat. Grain quality was determined by genotype (from 5.4% for husk content to 63.4% for the weight of 1,000 grains), weather conditions (from 7.0% for protein content to 56.8% for husk content), and sowing time (from 0.6% for protein content to 17.6% for grain unit). The influence of the seeding rate was insignificant (0.02–1.0%). The technological indicators depended on the interaction of meteorological conditions x sowing time (from 4.28% for the weight of 1,000 seeds to 16.8% for uniformity); the protein content was dependent on the interaction of genotype x meteorological conditions by 8.3%. The optimal sowing period lasted from 15 May to 18 May. In this period we registered the formation of oat grains with the maximum grain unit (for the chaffy varieties it was 476–532 g/L; for the huskless variety it was 641–652 g/L), the weight of 1,000 grains (for the chaffy varieties it was 31.1–38.5 g, for the huskless variety it was 24.6–25.0 g), and uniformity (94.7–98.1%), minimal husk content (24.4–27.8%), as well as a fairly high protein (9.03–12.57%) and starch (51.9–62.5%) contents in the experiment.
