Summary. Researches were carried out to create variety of reed canary with high grass forage qualities and resistant to extreme environmental conditions. Researches in nurseries with starting material allowed revealing promising forms and single out the best among them for including in the breeding program, under which it was created reed canary grass variety Bogatyr. The starting material was variety Firstborn of Northwestern Research Institute on Agriculture and Pedja of Lithuanian Research Institute on Soil Management. When forming a synthetic population to assess combining ability polycross method was used. Variety grows very quickly in the spring and after cutting, has high level of regeneration, winter hardiness, and resistance to lodging, pests and diseases. It has exceptional resistance to flooding (more than 50 days). Varieties in the early vegetation stage has the level of leaves quantity – 63,2%, the protein content in the green mass – 7,3…14,6%. It exceeds the standard for green mass yield at 2, 5 t-ha, dry matter – 0, 8 t-ha, seeds – 0, 02 t-ha. The variety is recommended for cultivation in the taiga and sub-taiga zones of Western Siberia and northern regions of the European part of Russia. Seed plots advisable to place in areas with high humidity and content of nutrients. In 2009 the variety is included in the State register of breeding achievements and approved for cultivation in all regions of Russia.
