RICE VARIETIY MAGNAT CREATED USING BIOTECHNOLOGY

Summary. Mid-ripening rice variety Magnat (Don 1664), carrying genes for resistance to rice blast, was created at All-Russia Research Institute of Grain Crops in collaboration with the biotechnology laboratory of All-Russia Rice Research Institute by marker breeding as a result of individual selection from the hybrid population (Pi 2 x Boyarin) x (Pi 1+33 x Boyarin), obtained by step crossing. We selected the hybrids, combined earliness, stunting, nonshattering and fertility of grains. After analysis the forms were identified, which carry the dominant allele of the gene of resistance to rice blast in the homozygous state. To monitor the presence of the dominant donor alleles of blast resistance gene Pi-1, Pi-2, Pi-33 the DNA analysis of microsatellite markers linked to these genes using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and electrophoresis was performed in the biotechnology laboratory of All-Russia Rice Research Institute. Developed variety Magnat was referred to the mid-season group, the vegetation period from planting to full maturity is 125 days. The average plant height is 96 cm, panicle length is 17…18 cm, number of spikelets is 186. Grains are oval, middle sized, length is 8.3 mm, width is 3.1 mm, thickness is 2.2 mm. Weight of 1000 grains is 22…26 g. The variety is resistant to rice blast, lodging and shattering. Its productivity in competitive tests was 8.25 t/ha on average for 2 years, which is higher than for the variety Boyarin by 1.1 t/ha.
