Summary. The article presents results of two cycles of the study of productivity and fodder quality of sainfoin variety Veles. The aim of the research was to determine the advantages of economic and biological properties of sainfoin cv Veles in comparison with the standard variety Zernogradsky 2. The work was done on the base of All-Russia Research Institute of Grain Crops named after I.G. Kalinenko in 2009-2012. The soil cover of the test plot is usual carbonate heavy loam black soil, which is characterized by the presence of thick humus layer (up to 120 cm) and high carbonate content. The reaction of the soil solution is close to the neutral (pH is 7.0…7.1). The content of easy hydrolyzable nitrogen is 60…110 mg/kg of soil, mobile phosphorus – 18.5 mg/kg, exchange potassium – 342 mg/kg. On the average in two cycles the productivity of green mass of cv Veles was 28.6 t/ha, which is higher on 1.8 t/ha or 6.7 % than in the standard. During all years of study the productivity of studied variety was significantly higher than of Zernogradsky 2 and on the average for two cycles was 7.4 t/ha that exceeded the yield of the standard by 0.8 t/ha or 12.1 %. In grain yield sainfoin Veles reliably surpassed the standard during all years and cycles. For two cycles the average grain productivity of cv Veles was 0.63 t/ha, which is higher than in Zernogradsky 2 on 8.6 %. Variety Veles differed from the standard by earlier and more powerful development, greater tillering and foliage. On the harvest of feed units it exceeds the standard by 826…866 feed units per a hectare, raw protein – by 197…243 kg/ha, digestible protein – by 175…220 kg/ha. In the comparisom with Zernogradsky 2 the fodder of new type contains more energy (by 1118 MJ/ha), its energy efficiency ratio is higher and energy/output ratio of production is lower.
