METHOD OF SEEDLING EVALUATION OF FIBER FLAX SUBJECT TO THE DEGREE OF FLAX GERMINANT DEVELOPMENT

Summary. The purpose of the study was to develop a more informative method for seedling evaluation of fiber flax, which enabled to determine the amount of germinated seeds simultaneously with the estimation of their spread and the degree of development of seedlings. The work was carried out in the laboratory of seed breeding of All-Russia Research Institute of Flax (Torzhok, Tver region) on fiber flax seeds of mid-ripening variety Tverskoj and late ripening variety Merilin with different characteristics of laboratory germination. Germination of seeds was determined in rolls of filter paper according to GOST 12038-84. Every roll consisted from three strips of moistened filter paper 60 cm in length; two of them 10 cm in width, folded together, were used as a bed, the third one covered the seeds. The design of the experiment included several variants of the width of the cover strip: 10 cm (control), 8, 6, 4, and 2 cm. The paper with seeds was rolled, placed upright in glass cups and put in an incubator at a temperature of 20 degrees for five days. Then the number of germinated seeds was counted up, the length and weight of raw sprouts and the amount of strong seedlings were determined. The most favorable water-air regime for the development of flax seedlings was with the width of the cover strip of 2 cm. In this case, in comparison with the control, the laboratory germination of seeds increased by 12 %, the average length of the seedling - to 4 cm, weight of raw spouts – by 1.7 g, the fraction of strong seedlings – by 59.7 %. The germination of flax seeds in rolls with 2 cm paper cover strip enables to determine the germination at the level of the method, recommended for this crop by GOST 12038, which provides for the use of Petri dishes, to obtain an additional characteristic of the seeds on the strength of growth and to reduce the time of test by two days.
