Summary.The variety of meadow clover “Saldo” (breeding number 17-3-1) was developed in the Research Institute of Agriculture of the Northern Trans-Urals by chemical mutagenesis, followed by the individual selection. The original parent form was meadow clover cv. Falensky 1, the seeds of which were treated by 0.005 % super mutagen DMS (dimethyl sulfate) together with 0.1 % PABA (paraaminobenzoic acid). Saldo refers to the late-ripening varieties of singe-cut type, has subtaiga winter hardiness, resistant to spring and autumn frosts. The duration of the period from the beginning of spring vegetation till the mowing is 54-65 days; till the seed maturation – 115-130 days. According to the results of evaluation against an artificial infectious background the variety was referred to middle resistant against Fusarium root rots. It is resistant to powdery mildew. In the competitive test for 2004-2009, the productivity of green mass was 44.3 t/ha, of air-dry matter – 10.0 t/ha, which is by 10.9 t/ha (32.6 %) and 1.5 t/ha (17.6 %) higher, than of the maternal form Falensky 1. The maximum productivity of green mass, obtained in 2005, for Saldo variety was 68.0 t/ha, Falensky 1 – 60.0 t/ha. The content of crude protein in the varieties varied from 15.3 to 19.6 % and from 14.6 to 16.2 %, respectively. On total yield of crude protein Saldo (1.8 t/ha) exceeds Falensky 1 (1.5 t/ha) by 0.3 t/ha or about 20.0 %. The foliage of the new variety, depending on weather conditions, varies from 42 to 60 %. Seed yield over years of investigation averaged 220 kg/ha (Falensky 1 – 180 kg/ha). During the State variety trials, the maximum yield of dry matter, 12.3 t/ha (the standard Atlant – 11.8 t/ha) was obtained at Maslyanskoe State Variety-Test Plot in Novosibirsk region. Since 2015 Saldo variety has been included in the State Register of Selection Achievements, admitted for usage in the Western-Siberian region.
