Summary. Experimental studies were carried out in 2014-2015 at the premises of the Novosibirsk State Agrarian University. The aim of the experiments was to determine the working capacity of accumulator batteries during self-warming of diesel engine with the help of machine for engine warm-up during the period of parking between shifts at the wide range of ambient temperatures. The program of study stipulated the search of a relationship between the temperature of electrolyte in the batteries and the maximum possible number of starts of the engine; and the determination of the possibility of recovery of storage capacity, spent at start, during the self-warming. The reduction of the temperature of electrolyte from plus 25 degrees to minus 27 degrees led to the decrease in the voltage at the battery clamps from 21.9 to 17.2 volts at the first start already due to the increase in the internal resistance of electrolyte. A fully charged battery with electrolyte temperature of plus 25 degrees and other conditions being equal, is able to provide 65 starts of the D-160 engine, discharging on 93 %, and with electrolyte temperature of minus 27 degrees, the degree of discharge does not exceed 12 %. During engine warm-up from the temperature in the cylinder head from plus 5 degrees to plus 50 degrees with electrolyte temperature of minus 15 degrees the battery charges during 13, 17, 22 and 27 minutes with the degree of discharge of 13, 25, 30 and 40 %, respectively. Density of electrolyte in this case increases from 1.245 to 1.281 g/cm3, which corresponds to an increase in the degree of charge from 60 to 90 % of its nominal capacity. At electrolyte temperature below minus 20 degrees there was an intense decrease in the efficiency of batteries charging from the electrical system. In this case, when charging the battery from a stationary device, there is active boiling of the batteries at a constant density. Thus, charging is possible only at temperatures above minus 20 degrees.
