Summary. The article presents the results on the development of spring wheat varieties for the resistance to loose smut. The investigations were carried out on experimental fields and in laboratories of Krasnoyarsk Research Agricultural Institute in 1972–2015. The source and breeding material were evaluated on artificial and natural infection backgrounds according to the methods developed by VIR. Immunological investigation for the resistance to loose smut was carried out in several directions: the evaluation of the race composition of the pathogen; the study of the resistance of the source and breeding material; genetic analysis of the resistance to loose smut; intentional breeding for immunity. It was studied 1200 samples of spring wheat during the implementation of the program on the search for sources of resistance to Ustilago tritici (Pers.) Jens in 1991–2010. For the direct use in the breeding process based on the study of sources of resistance according to the complex of valuable traits, a working collection was created. The collection included well-known samples, which were selected by other characteristics in addition to the resistance: productivity – Tuleevskaya, Omskaya 20, Omskaya 26, Omskaya 30, Omskaya 33, Serebrina, Duet, Tertsiya, Altajskaya 65, Altajskaya 530, Sibirsky Alians, Zlatozara, Sibirskaya 65 (Russia), Omega (Poland), St-9879, HE-325, Maija (Czechoslovakia), Tioga (USA); grain quality – Ulianovskaya 75, Eritrospermum 17430, Altajsky Prostor, Altajskaya 65, Sibirsky Alians, Iren, Novosibirskaya 15, Valeria (Russia), Monad (New Zealand); early ripeness – Novosibirskaya 15, Iren, Novosibirskaya 22, Rechka, Tyumenskaya 80 (Russia), Era/Pembina (Canada), ZE-1927 (Uruguay), Stiletto (Australia), K-48738 (Peru). Evaluation of breeding material on infectious backgrounds and rigid elimination allowed to develop varieties of spring wheat, resistant to loose smut: Krasnoyarskaya, Taezhnaya, Novosolyanskaya, Krasnoyarskaya 83, Oya, Cheremshanka, Minusa, Krasnoyarskaya 12, Kanskaya.
Keywords: wheat, breeding, loose smut, resistance, Ustilago tritici.
