Summary. The reactions of mid and early ripening varieties of spring barley to sowing date, fertilizers, means of chemical protection of plants were studied. The investigation was carried out in 2010–2012. The soil of the experimental plot was typical chernozem, medium thick, with heavy granulometric texture and high provision with main nutrients (N-NO3 was 7.4 mg/kg, P2O5 was 25.6 mg/100 g, K2O was 20.5 mg/100 g according to Chirikov’s method). The humus content was 4.3–6.4 % (by Tyurin’s method). The design of the experiment stipulated the following variants: sowing date (factor A) – early (18 May) and late (28 May); the use of chemical means of plant protection and fertilizers (factor B) – without treatment (the control) and application of N30P30K60 with a seed treatment with Vial TT (0.4 l/ha). Varieties of both maturity groups showed an increase in yield with late sowing date. Seed treatment and optimal doses of fertilizers have a positive effect on yield (3.03–4.22 t/ha) and product quality (weight of 1000 grains is more than in the control by 0.1–11.5 g). It is observed the dependence of seed germination from sowing date: for the Buyan variety it is 83 % at the early date and 89 % at the late one; for the Sobolek variety it is 87 and 95 %, correspondingly. The Sobolek variety reacted well to fertilizers and plant protection means in the first sowing date (+5 %), the Kedr and Oskar varieties – in the second one (+8 %). The obtained results indicate the prospects of sowing of forage crops in the middle-end of the third decade of May, taking into account their shorter vegetation period, in comparison with wheat. The dependence of seed germination from sowing date in favorable years was not observed. In both terms, mid-ripening varieties formed higher weight of 1000 grains (by 2–6 g) than early-ripening ones.

Keywords: spring barley, sowing date, maturity group, means of chemical protection, fertilizers, protectant, yield.
