Abstract. The studies were carried out with the aim of organizational and economic substantiation of milk production increase, improvement of efficiency and intensification of the sector, identification of promising areas of its development under conditions of radioactive contamination. The object of the research covers agricultural organizations and personal farms in Gomel region producing milk in the contaminated territories. The subject of the research includes processes and phenomena that determine efficiency and intensification of milk production. As a result, the studies systematized the basic provisions on the formation of the organizational and economic mechanism for the increase in the efficiency of dairy cattle-breeding in view of the impact of adverse environmental factors, capabilities of farming enterprises and the state of their material and technical bases. This made it possible to develop measures to reduce costs and increase the profitability of milk production. The theoretical and methodological foundations of intensifying dairy cattle-breeding in the zone of radioactive contamination considering natural and economic conditions of Gomel region suppose improvement of forage supply, protective measures on farmlands (organizational, agrochemical, agrotechnical, etc.), rationally usage of production potential, and others. The methodological approach to a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the dairy sector in the contaminated areas requires an application of ecological safety criteria (density of soil pollution; radionuclide accumulation level in forage and products; type of forage lands and their utilization; method of cows keeping; type of forage forming the diet). The main areas of the dairy sector development in the zone of radioactive contamination consist in increasing livestock productivity, applying advanced technologies, improving the return of the resources used and labor motivation, producing competitive and environmentally safe products, searching for more profitable market outlets, and others.
