Abstract. The aim of the research was to study the background distribution of trace elements in soils and plant cover of a natural biocenosis. The study was carried out on the plot “Yamskaya steppe” of the state preserve “Belogorie”, located in the forest steppe zone of Belgorod region. The soil cover was presented by leached chernozem, thick, rich, heavy loamy, on loess-like loam. The plant cover was steppe motley grass, there were up to 45 species per 1 m2 with the prevalence of feather-grass, sheep fescue, prairie June grass. The content of organic matter according to Tyurin’s method and pH value were 9.7% and 5.3 in horizon A1; 4.3% and 5.2 in horizon AB; 2.7% and 5.1 in horizon B; 1.5% and 5.0 in horizon BC; 1.1% and 7.3 in horizon C. According to the total content in the humus-accumulative horizon of the leached chernozem, the elements form the following decreasing series: Zn (45.7 mg/kg) – Ni (25.4 mg/kg) – Cr (20.4 mg/kg) – Cu (14.3 mg/kg) – Pb (13.0 mg/kg) – Co (8.6 mg/kg) – Аs (3.17 mg/kg) – Mo (2.8 mg/kg) – Cd (0.33 mg/kg) – Hg (0.02 mg/kg). The content of Zn, Cu, Hg in horizon A1 was higher, and that of Pb, Mo, Ni, Cr and As were lower than in the parent rock material. The total content of Cd and Co in horizons Al and C was approximately the same. The background level of the mobile forms of Zn (0.75 mg/kg), Cu (0.19 mg/kg), Co (0.14 mg/kg) and Mo (0.09 mg/kg) in horizon A1 can be characterized as low. By the value of the coefficient of biological absorption, the elements form the following decreasing series: Hg (10.15) – Zn (9.47) – Cu (5.69) – Cd (2.51) – Pb (1.59) – Mo (1.23) – Ni (0.4) – Cr (0.29) – Co (0.22) – Аs (0.13).

Keywords: background monitoring; biological absorption coefficient; clarke; content of mobile forms of trace elements; leached chernozem.
