Abstract. The aim of the research was to study the effect of separate and combined use of organic and mineral fertilizers in a nine-field grain-fallow-row crop rotation on the balance of organic matter in ordinary chernozem. The studies were carried out in a stationary experiment in the village of Rassvet, Aksai district, Rostov region. The effect of 11 doses of fertilizers was studied in comparison with the control (without fertilizers). The area of the plot was 132 m2. The agrotechnics of crop cultivation was generally accepted in the soil-climatic zone. The soil of the experimental site was ordinary chernozem, very warm, short freezing. The granulometric composition was heavy-loamy, sometimes light clayey. In the arable soil layer, the initial content of humus was 4.41%, total nitrogen – 0.22–0.24%, total phosphorus – 0.17–0.18%, potassium – 2.3–2.4%. The content of mineral nitrogen and mobile phosphorus was low, of available potassium – increased. Without fertilizer application, the amount of plant residues, incorporated into the soil, was not enough to compensate for the mineralization of carbon, and the balance of humus was sharply negative. Under conditions of the Azov zone of Rostov region, it is necessary to apply 8.9 t of manure and N44P22K22 per hectare of crop rotation area in order to maintain soil fertility and preserve humus stocks on the initial level in the nine-field grain-fallow-row crop rotation. The application of manure in the dose of 11.1 t/ha and mineral fertilizers in the dose of N71P23K23 provided maximum productivity of the studied crop rotation, which, in turn, contributed to the greatest accumulation of carbon in the soil, ensuring a positive balance of humus up to +2050 kg/ha.
