INTERGENERIC HYBRIDS X TRITITRIGIA CZICZINII X ELYMUS FARCTUS AND PROSPECTS OF THEIR USE IN BREEDING

Abstract. The aim of the research was the introgression of genetic material of Elymus farctus (Viv.) Runemark ex Melderis in soft wheat in order to expand the genetic diversity of Triticum aestivum. In the department of remote hybridization of the Main Botanical Garden of the RAS (Moscow region), unique hybrids xTrititrigia cziczinii Tzvel x Elymus farctus (Viv.) Runemark ex Melderis were created. The resulting hybrids are of independent scientific and practical interest in a complex of features that are associated with the active form-building process in their progeny. Hybrids F1 (2n = 63) were obtained in 2000. Under conditions of 2017, seven F6 samples: f11814, f9714а, f9714b, f5014а, f5014b, f9914 and f6314b were compared with standards. We examined them as potential sources of useful properties for new wheat varieties. In all samples ears were longer by 1.3–10.5 cm than that of M 548 variety (the standard for studying Trititrigia). The weight of 1000 grains was lower by 8.4–22.3 g than that of Moskovskaya 39 standard. In all samples, the number of kernels in the ear was higher than in M 548variety (for f9714a the number was higher by 27.3 grains). F11814, f9714a, f9714b, f5014a, f5014b, f9914 and f6314b were salt resisting under laboratory conditions in comparison with the standard – soft wheat ‘Priokskaya’. When the concentration of NaCl was 2.5%, unlike the standard, hybrids with E. farctus retain the ability to germinate. Samples f11814, f9714a, f9714b, in comparison with the standard variety of soft wheat ‘Moskovskaya 39’, are promising for the use in breeding on grain quality. All hybrids in the mass fraction of gluten exceeded the standard from 5.3 to 9.2% and belonged to the first group of quality. According to the structure of crumb, taste and aroma, they corresponded to wheat bread and meet the requirements of valuable wheat (f9714a) and good filler (f11814 and f9714b). Hybrids x Trititrigia cziczinii x Elymus farctus will be used in both breeding and genetic studies.
