Abstract. The aim of the research was to study the relationship between morphological features of a ear and quality indices of spring wheat grain, determined by the presence of certain alleles of gliadin. Crosses and cultivation of F1, F2 and F3 hybrids were carried out in 2010–2016. The objects for the experiment were 5 hybrid populations, created with the participation of Triticum aestivum varieties and Triticum petropavlovskyi, in which the original parental forms differed in colour or pubescence. In each population, grains from F3 spikes differing in the morphotype were compared with regard to gliadin composition and sedimentation index. Field studies and grain quality evaluation were carried out in the N.V. Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden, Remote Hybridization Department; the storage protein composition was determined in N.I. Vavilov Institute of General Genetics. In the Tyumenskaya-29 x Irgina combination, red-spike plants carrying the Gli-B1n allele showed better sedimentation than white-spike ones (sedimentation index 37 mL versus 27 mL). In the Barta x Zauralochka combination, the white-spike morphotype with allele Gli-B1е outperformed the red-spike one with allele Gli-B1k (55 mL versus 45 mL). No difference in sedimentation between morphotypes was detected in three hybrid populations (Svirel x Gornouralskaya, Chelyabinskaya-17 x Svecha, K-43376 x Severyanka). Association between red spike colour (gene Rg1) and allele Gli-B1n, determining good flour quality, was found in cultivars Irgina and Gornouralskaya. T. petropavlovskyi (sample K-43376) carried gliadin-coding alleles characteristic for soft wheat: Gli-A1p, Gli-B1n and Gli-D1a.

Keywords: soft wheat; Triticum aestivum; Triticum petropavlovskyi; genetic markers; gliadins; grain quality; ear colour; ear pubescence.
