Abstract. Under conditions of agricultural production in Siberia, the share of the loads transported by the motor transport at low temperatures reaches 20%. One of the major factors defining efficiency of operation of trucks are viscous and temperature characteristics of working fluids, and first of all lubricating oils. The decrease in temperature of lubricating oils under operating conditions leads to the increase in drag torque and violation of the greasing modes of details in units of vehicles. Therefore, production vehicle operation in frigid climate is followed by a considerable decrease in efficiency in view of the raised expense of material resources. Questions of thermal preparation for vehicle units subject to significant influence of the environment are considered insufficiently from the production and scientific standpoint. A complex indicator is proposed as a criterion defining the optimum thermal conditions of a unit or a vehicle in general. It considers costs of resources for providing the thermal mode of a unit S(P) and costs of resources to overcome the moment of friction in the unit S(MT) under the specified conditions. The target function of optimization of the thermal conditions of the separate unit is the minimization of total costs of resources for the functioning of the unit, i.e. (S(P) + S(MT)) aims to the minimum. We will define costs of resources for warming up of the unit as the product of specific costs of resources to heat S(ud) and difference of ambient temperatures and the temperature of working fluid delta(Т), i.e. S(P) = S(ud) x delta(T). Costs of resources to overcome the moment of friction S(MT) is defined as the product of resource expenses at the most admissible temperature of the unit S0 and e sup(-m*delta(T)), where m is a coefficient of a decrease in frictional torque. For a system of units the definition of the thermal mode is complicated by the presence of mutual influence. Therefore for the vehicle in general, the justification of the optimum thermal mode comes down to the definition of a function minimum of resource expenses for the whole system. Calculation of optimality criterions needs to be made in the range of temperatures of lubricating oil T(M) from the minimum to the maximum level of temperature of constructional and operational materials.
