Abstract. The aim of the research was to develop a highly productive variety of spring triticale with stable productivity and suitability for use in modern technologies of forage conservation for the Nonchernozem belt of Russia. The breeding process was carried out in 2004–2010 on two types of soils: slightly acidic sandy sod-podzolic and medium-loamy gray forest soils. As a result, it was developed spring triticale ‘Carmen’, which was admitted for usage in the Far-Eastern and East-Siberian regions of the Russian Federation in 2015. Due to the breeding against two backgrounds, the new variety combines a high yield potential (up to 7.32 t/ha) and it is resistant to the moisture deficit. The variety is intended for the grain and grain-haylage purposes. Its average height is 93–107 cm. On gray forest soil the average yield of Carmen (4.99 t/ha over 2008–2017) exceeded the yield of the standard ‘Grebeshok’ by 0.37 t/ha. On light sod-podzolic soil the average yield was 3.77 t/ha, the increase in the productivity of the standard ‘Ulyana’ was 16.4%. The lodging resistance is high. In years with severe droughts the new variety exceeded the standards in the value of this parameter by 0.6–1.2 points. The variety is coarse-grained, the weight of 1000 seeds is from 40 to 52 g. The average protein content was 13.5% over the years of the research. According to the length of vegetation the variety belonged to the mid-season group. Depending on the growing area and vegetation conditions it ripened during 76–105 days. The crops were not affected by powdery mildew, rust, covered and loose smut, it was susceptible to Septoria leaf spot at below the average degree. Carmen variety is recommended primarily for cultivation on poor, slightly acidic, light soils, as well as in farms with poor provision with material resources.

Keywords: spring triticale; variety; productivity; stress resistance; grain and grain-haylage directions of use.
