Abstract. In the State Register of Breeding Achievements, 33 varieties of barley were approved for use in the West Siberian region, including 23 varieties (70%) developed by Siberian scientists. Today, the goal of the work of breeders with this crop is the development of a new generation of varieties able to consistently realize their potential and at the same time adequately respond to changes in growing conditions. The paper presents the agrobiological characteristics of spring mid-season barley ‘Sasha’, originated from the Siberian Research Institute of Agriculture. The variety is of medicum subvariety, belongs to the steppe ecological group. It is characterized by high resistance to drought and lodging, weak susceptibility to black and stone smut. The variety is medium tall (the height of 70–74 cm), the bush is semi-upright, the thickness and strength of the stem are medium, the straw is strong. Sheets are of average width (intermediate). Grains are large, yellow, filmy, semi-long. The weight of 1000 grains is 51.2–54.0 g. The flowability of grain during sowing is good. Under the conditions of Western Siberia, it possesses high (on average 4.2 t/ha; +0.9 t/ha to the standard) and stable (the indicator of the level and stability of the variety is 210%) yield. The variety is responsive to changes in growing conditions. In terms of the content of protein (13.59%) and crude fat (2.43%) in grains, it is at the level of the standard, in starch content, it is inferior to the standard (-2.37%). Due to higher yields, the increase in the collection of protein, starch, and crude fat was 106.32, 365.48 and 14.55 kg/ha, respectively. The variety is recommended for growing for feed purposes.
