Abstract. Screening of self-fertile, autotripping lines of alfalfa, the development of complex hybrid populations and varieties on their basis were performed at the Ural Research Institute of Agriculture in 2003–2016. Forty-two populations of alfalfa were studied according to the ability to set seeds under field conditions (2007–2016) and under complete isolation during growing on SUVRs (shelves for accelerated vegetation of plants) in a winter greenhouse (2008–2009). The largest number of self-fertile plants with a seed weight of more than 2 g per plant was found in populations Uralochka, Nakhodka x 193-95, 192-92, Siberian 8 x 193-95, RP 196 x Sarga, 20-89 N, 193-95, Nakhodka x Sarga. Self-fertile hybrids and samples were propagated by cuttings and planted under field conditions in 2008. In seed weight per plant, hybrids 192-92, Nakhodka x Sarga, Vela x Sarga, RP 196 x Sarga, 27-86, Siberian 8 x 193-95 significantly exceeded Uralochka standard (10.04 g) by 1.53–5.14 g. In 2012–2016 in the breeding nursery of alfalfa (sowed in 2011), the evaluation of the progeny of isolated biotypes by seed productivity was carried out. On average, hybrids 205-06 (m), Nakhodka x 20-89 N, Vela x Sarga and VS-08 (m) population were the best in seed productivity; they exceeded Uralochka standard by 22.5–54.4%. In 2012, the seed productivity of the best hybrid 205-06 (m) was 161.8 g per 10 m2 or 110.8% relative to the standard, in the second year of use (2013), it was at the level of 241.3–247.2 per 10 m2 in the best hybrids. From the breeding nursery, three complex hybrid populations were selected and formed on the basis of morphological features. In 2015, they were included in the nursery of the competitive test. Seed yield in these populations in 2016 was at the level of 542–746 kg/ha, with a standard yield of 371 kg/ha. In the second year of life, there was no significant increase compared to the standard.
