Abstract. The research was conducted in the south-western part of the Central Chernozem Region in the territory of the Belgorod Region. The purpose of the work was to analyze the long-term dynamics of the organic matter content in the chernozems of the Belgorod region, as well as the effect of slope exposure and erosion degree on this indicator. The soil cover was mainly represented by typical, leached and ordinary chernozems. In this paper, we used the data received from a continuous agrochemical survey conducted in 1984–2018, and a soil erosion survey conducted in 2013–2018. The organic matter content was determined by Tyurin method (GOST 26213-91) in the test laboratory of Belgorod Agrochemical Center. According to the results of 2015–2018 agrochemical survey, the weighted average content of organic matter in the soils increased, as compared with 2010–2014, by 0.2%. At the same time, the majority of arable lands of the region (70.6%) belonged to the category of medium-provided ones. 15.9% of the examined soils (the highest level for the entire observation period) were characterized by the increased content of organic matter; the proportion of soils with low content of organic matter reached a historical minimum – 13.1%. This is mainly due to the manuring level increase (up to 8.1 t/ha), wide green manure use (19.4% of the cultivated area), crop root residues raise due to crop yields increase, increasing proportion – by 0.8% – of perennial grasses in the land under cultivation. As the degree of erosion of typical and ordinary chernozems increases, the content of organic matter in soils on the slopes of southern exposures decreases to the most extent, compared to watersheds, on the eastern and western slopes to a lesser extent, and least of all on the slopes of northern exposures.
