Abstract. This research was aimed at analysing the dynamics of trace elements in the soils of the Volgograd Oblast during the 1995–2016 period. The concentration of the mobile forms of copper, zinc, cobalt and manganese was determined in an extract of ammonium acetate buffer solution with a pH of 4.8 (by the Krupsky-Alexandrova method) in soil samples from 21 reference sites, which location was established with regard to their geographical coordinates. The reference sites were located on the territory of the Volgogradsky Agrochemical Service Centre. In all the reference sites, a shortage of mobile zinc and cobalt compounds was noted, with the content of these elements demonstrating the levels of 0.60 ... 0.64 mg/kg and 0.04 ... 0.06 mg/kg, respectively. The dynamics of the manganese content is shown to be negative. In terms of this element, the reference soils have been transferred from the high-content to the medium-content group, with its weighted average values decreasing from 27.8 mg/kg in 1995 to 16.2 mg/kg in 2016. In most reference sites, the arable horizon is characterized by a growing trend in terms of copper concentration: these soils have been transferred from the group with a low copper content to that with its medium content. The weighted average content of mobile copper in the arable horizon has increased from 0.18 to 0.23 mg/kg.
