Abstract. The studies were carried out to analyze the dynamics of humus content depending on a climatic zone and a cycle of agrochemical survey of arable soils of Altai Krai. The monitoring results were also systematized by the main soil types (chernozem, chestnut and grey forest soils). They were also compared with data published in the late 19th century. In the climatic zones, the humus content gradually increased from the west to the east – from the Kulundinskaya zone (2.7–3.1%) to the Altai zone (6.6–7.7%). For more than a hundred years the provision of chestnut soils of the region with humus has not changed significantly. According to archival data, it ranged from 1.6 to 3.9%, whereas according to the results of the modern research it ranged from 2.0 to 4.0%. In the 19th-century humus content in chernozem increased sharply from the west to the northeast of the region – first from 4% to 6%, then from 6% to 10% and in the east, it increased up to 14–18%. Over the past years, the fertility of chernozem decreased significantly. The current humus content in the chernozem of the Aleya zone amounts to 2.5–4.5%. In chernozem of the Ob zone, it is 3.2–5.6%. Only in Salair, Biysk-Chumysh, and Altai zones tracts of chernozems with a humus content of more than 7% remained. They are concentrated in Smolensky, Sovietsky, Togulsky, Krasnogorsky and Soloneshensky districts. In general, chestnut soils are characterized by the largest proportion of soils with low humus content in Altai Krai – up to 100%. In chernozem, the value of this indicator was more stable varying from 25.1% to 31.8%. In grey forest soils the content of humus in arable lands was even lower – from 9.9% to 20.6%, but their area expanded more intensively.

Keywords: humus; chernozems; chestnut soils; grey forest soils; natural climatic zone; Altai Krai.
