Abstract. In 2011–2018 we compared the main characteristics of adaptive capacity and stability of the new barley variety ‘Pamyati Chepeleva’ with the varieties listed in the State register of breeding achievements in the Volga-Vyatka region: Veresk, Sonet, Acha, Binom, and Bagrets. To determine the main factors of adaptive capacity and stability, we calculated the multiple regression equations and elasticity coefficients. Pamyati Chepeleva variety was distinguished by the highest general adaptive capacity (vi = 0.47), which was stipulated by its stability (Sgi = 20.0%). The variance of the specific adaptive capacity of Veresk, Sonet, Binom, and Bagrets varieties ranged from 2.30 to 2.56, whereas for Pamyati Chepeleva variety it was 1.07. The genotype selection value (GSVi) of the new barley variety was 4.1. Among other varieties, Acha was the most valuable (GSVi = 3.5). Under stressful conditions, Pamyati Chepeleva variety provided an increase in the yield up to 0.67 t/ha in comparison with the drought-resistant variety Acha. In favourable years it was not inferior to the intensive varieties Sonet, Bagrets, and Veresk. Pamyati Chepeleva variety was distinguished by the highest tillering energy and formed a dense plant stand (692 pcs/m2 on average) in a sustained way. This was higher than by 6–26% than in the other genotypes in the experiment. At the same time, its yield to a lesser degree depended on the variation of this characteristic (eX1 = 0.07). Pamyati Chepeleva variety was more adaptive in the critical period from tillering to stem elongation (eX3 = 2.59). At the same time, by the average number of grains per ear (20.3 pcs), it was inferior only to Veresk (22.3 pcs). The average grain yield of the new variety for 8 years exceeded 5.00 t/ha, which was higher by 0.45 t/ha (10%) than that of the most common in Russia Acha variety and by 0.43–0.72 t/ha (10–16%) – in comparison with the other varieties recommended for cultivation in different years.
