Abstract. The studies were conducted in 2000–2018 in order to breed a winter rye variety with the low content of water-soluble pentosans in grain for the conditions of Eastern Siberia. Siberian varieties Mininskaya, Yeniseikaya, Korotkostebelnaya 69 were used as parent forms. In the work we used the method of accumulative intrapopulation crossings and the method of clonal halves. The new variety was named Krasnoyarskaya Universalnaya. Yeniseykaya variety was taken as a standard. The new variety was studied in 2016–2018 at the state variety test plots in various soil climatic zones of the region: subtaiga (3 variety test plots), forest-steppe (3 variety test plots) and steppe (2 variety test plots). Guaranteed yield increases were noted for five plots. At two variety test plots, the variety’s parameters were at the level of the standard. On average, at the variety test plots of the Krasnoyarsk Krai, the yield of the new variety was 3.15 t/ha, which was higher by 0.34 t/ha than for the standard. In the Republic of Khakassia this indicator amounted to 3.30 t/ha (at the standard level). The highest yield of the variety was formed at the variety test plots in the forest-steppe zone – on average 3.28–5.44 t/ha for three years. The excess over the standard amounted to 0.43–0.96 t/ha. In 2018 the variety was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation. The variety Krasnoyarskaya Universalnaya refers to vulgare subspecies; it is diploid form; the duration of the vegetation period is 316–349 days; it is winter-hardy and lodging-resistant; the plant height is 104–143 cm; the weight of 1000 grains is 24–35 g; the grain unit is 700–756 g/L. Baking qualities are good. The variety is characterized by a high content of raw and digestible protein (14.5% and 11.0%, respectively), nitrogen-free extractives (73%), sugars (3.5%) and has a rather high energy value (1.19 feed units per kg; metabolic energy is 11.15 MJ). The content of water-soluble pentosans is 0.5–0.8%.
