Abstract. In 2013–2017 we estimated winter damage to branches and wood of selected cherry hybrids to determine the most winter-hardy forms in the Republic of Tatarstan. The garden was located in the south-west of the republic on the right bank of the Volga. It was planted in 2004–2005. The soil was brown-grey forest medium loamy. The area of the garden was 1 ha; the planting pattern was 4 x 4 m. The objects of the study were 22 selected cherry hybrids bred in the Tatarstan Research Institute of Agriculture. In the years of the study, the average monthly air temperature and the amount of precipitation in the autumn period mostly exceeded the long-term average annual indicators. Air temperatures of -29 C at the beginning of winter and -35 C in the middle of winter were not critical for the selected cherry hybrids of the local breeding. After - 35 C frost in winter the moderate damage (2.2–2.5 points) were characteristic for the selected 101-1 and 35-71 hybrids. The hybrids 2-1-83, 1-10-30 and 1-11-6 were not observed to be subfreezed. The smallest variability in the winter hardiness of branches and wood was observed in the hybrids 12-1 (11% and 34.4%, respectively) and 12-37-29 (12.2% and 33.3%) for 5 years. The display of the studied signs was more dependent on the genotype (39.2–48.9%) than on the conditions during the year (13.4–26.6%) and the interaction of genotype and environment (28.0–29.4%). The cherry hybrids 2-1-83 and 1-11-6 were the best by the studied parameters. It is expedient to use them in breeding for hardiness as a source of this sign.
