Abstract. Laboratory studies were conducted to assess the efficacy of biological preservatives in the preparation of succulent forage from the pre-wilted green mass of Aislu alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Alfalfa was grown in the Laishevsky district of the Republic of Tatarstan and harvested in the budding phase. The dried mass was canned in polymer jars. Ferbak-Sil (Russia) and Sil-All (Great Britain) biological preparations were added according to the manufacturers’ recommendations at doses of 70 mL and 2.5 g per 1 ton of weight, respectively. The phytomass was carefully tamped, hermetically closed and stored in a darkened room at temperatures from 8 С to 18 С. The control was phytomass without preservatives. The dry matter content in the pre-wilted mass of alfalfa before laying for storage was 41.4%, metabolic energy – 3.57 MJ, crude protein – 8.41%, total sugars – 35.87 g, carotene – 31.28 mg/kg natural forage. Ferbak-Sil demonstrated the best preservation results, the use of which stimulated lactic fermentation in the phytomass. This, in turn, had a positive effect on the dry matter safety and metabolic energy, which concentrations in the haylage were 43.50% and 3.75 MJ, respectively. These values were higher than the control by 5.47% and 13.98%, respectively. The use of Sil-All led to the maximum increase (1.15%) in the formation of organic acids (lactic, acetic). The carotene content in the forage with the addition of this preservative was 16.69% higher than in the control.
