Abstract. The experiments were conducted in 2018–2019 in the Gatchinsky district of the Leningrad region. The study aimed to identify the sources of economically valuable traits of new collection samples of spring barley by the main elements of the yield structure, ecological plasticity indices, and prospects for developing valuable breeding material. We compared 10 new varieties of spring barley bred outside Russia (from the collection of genetic resources of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources) with the standards Suzdalets and Leningradsky. Then we identified genotypes with the best economically valuable traits: Medikum 11, Medikum 176 (Kazakhstan), Evergreen (Denmark), Lipen, and Taler (Belarus) were the most early-ripening (vegetation duration was 79–81 days); Medikum 176 (Kazakhstan) and Issota (Germany) had the longest ear (7.9–8.1 cm); 2033E (France) was characterized by the greatest number of grains per ear among two-row varieties (22.0 pcs); Kalkyul and Mauritia (Germany) were characterized by the greatest weight of grain per ear (1.3–1.4 g); Evergreen (Denmark), Kalkyul, and Mauritia (Germany) were characterized by the greatest weight of grain per plant (3.4–3.6 g); Medikum 11 and Medikum 176 (Kazakhstan) were characterized by the greatest weight of 1000 grains (51.2–53.1 g). The adaptive potential of the studied samples, except for Leningradsky standard and Lipen variety, did not exceed 10.0 units. In terms of ecological plasticity index (Jsp), Mauritia variety was at the level of the two-row standard Suzdalets (1.0 unit); the multi-row varieties Lipen (1.4 units) and Taler (1.6 units) exceeded Leningradsky standard by 0.6 units and 0.8 units, respectively. In terms of the prospect index (Jp), Suzdalets standard (82.0 units) was exceeded by two-row samples such as varieties 2033E (by 7.7 units), Evergreen (by 3.1 units), Kalkyul (by 1.7 units), and Fitzroy (by 1.4 units). The multi-row varieties Lipen and Taler surpassed Leningradsky standard (61.7 units) in terms of Jp by 9.4 units and 8.5 units, respectively.
