Abstract. In this article, observing more than three dozen methods as an example, it was concluded that different scientists put different meanings into the concepts of productivity and stability. As a result of applying different methods under the same conditions, the same variety receives a different characteristic of productivity and stability. In this regard, at least 6 methods have been developed for unambiguous assessing of productivity and stability of breeding achievements. The methods from the proposed review are based on comparison with one of four fundamentally different standards – a real-life variety; the variety model formulated by a crop breeder; a variety model, validated mathematically; model of a variety from a set of already bred and new varieties participating in one test. The main feature of the previously developed methods is that they are not functional under the conditions of a dynamic breeding process, when new breeding numbers enter each new cycle of variety testing, which is why the sequence of several cycles of variety testing consists of a different list of them. A new methodological approach based on the definition of the concept of variety change has been proposed. It consists of comparing new breeding achievements with the existing, well-established variety (standard), in several (at least three) gradations of weather and soil conditions (ecological environments) in compliance with the principle of single difference and attributing the results to one of three cases. In the 1st case the new variety has a consistent advantage over the standard due to the fact that in all environments in the test it has been more productive than the standard. In the 2nd case the new variety is more productive than the standard in most environments and is not inferior to it in any of them, which should be assessed as an unsustainable advantage over the standard. The 3rd case includes all other results of variety testing.

Keywords: variety; variety testing; method; breeding algorithm; standard; sustainable advantage; unsustainable advantage.
