Abstract. The purpose of the study was to optimize the elements of the technology of barley cultivation in the Altai Territory. The work was performed in the south of Western Siberia in the Cis-Ob’ forest-steppe after a fallow forecrop in 2017–2019. We studied four varieties: Vorsinsky 2, Aley, Margret, and Lakomb. The experiment design provided for the study of four seeding rates (2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 million germinating seeds/ha) in 4-fold repetition. With a decrease in the seeding rate, seed germination increased on average by 14.7% – from 76.2% (5.0 million seeds/ha) to 90.9% (2.0 million seeds/ha). The main contribution to the variability of the trait was made by seeding rate (51.4%), genotype (12.4%), and growing conditions (3.5%). During the growing season, we registered a loss of barley plants, the size of which was in direct proportion to the seeding rate. At the seeding rate of 2.0 million seeds/ha, 13.2% more plants survived before harvesting than at the rate of 5.0 million seeds/ha. In all options, at the least seeding rate, the maximum number of plants in the experiment remained before harvesting – 95.2%. The main contribution to the viability of plants was made by seeding rates – 64.4%. Vorsinsky 2 gave the highest yield at the rate of 2.0 million seeds/ha (6.04 t/ha); Margret and Aley varieties gave the highest yield at the rate of 4.0 million seeds/ha (5.84–6.60 t/ha). Lakomb variety did not react to the seeding rate and only at the seeding rate of 2.0 million seeds/ha we registered a significant decrease in its productivity. The main contribution to the variability of yield was made by genotype (44.7%), conditions (11.5%), and seeding rate (1.2%). At the seeding rate of 2.0 million seeds/ha, plants of all the barley varieties showed the highest productive bushiness, the number of grains per ear, and the weight of 1000 grains.
