Abstract. The article describes the main stages in the development of breeding of field and fruit crops over 90 years. The study conducted by the breeders from the Krasnoyarsk Research Institute of Agriculture using its experimental network resulted in the development of 409 varieties of spring wheat, barley, oat, winter rye, pea, buckwheat, fruit and berry crops, of which 210 varieties were accepted for production in different years. The institute was recognized as an originator of 84 varieties including 26 varieties of grain and leguminous crops, 11 herb varieties, 24 fruit varieties, and 19 berry varieties. The effectiveness of breeding especially increased with establishing a breeding centre. According to the breeding program until 2030, in the coming decade (2021–2030) the institute plans to breed four spring wheat varieties; two barley and oat varieties each; three winter rye varieties; two pea varieties; one apple, pear, plum, apricot, black currant, gooseberry, and honeysuckle variety; and two red currant varieties. New directions in the breeding of field, fruit, and berry crops provide for the development of low-pentosan winter rye varieties, as well as barley and oat varieties with increased content of beta-glucans in grain. Joint efforts of breeders and specialists from related departments, i.e. geneticists, biotechnologists, physiologists, and immunologists, allowed approaching the goal of breeding varieties of a new generation using introgressive breeding. At the same time, scientists develop agricultural technologies for breeding new varieties. The results will be reflected in the variety passport when it is zoned.
