Database for selection and genetic indicators of Eastern Siberian spring barley in the Access DBMS

Abstract. The article presents the design process and the possibility of using a relational database for storage, search, and analysis selection, genetic, and economically valuable indicators of the breeding material of spring barley. The breeding material was taken from the Krasnoyarsk Research Institute of Agriculture. The paper substantiates the choice and shows the software implementation of the MS Access database. The developed database included 7 tables, 12 forms, 6 queries, 3 reports, and 7 macros. The database tables show the results of a long-term (1990–2020) study of the allelic composition of reserve proteins (hordeins) of local forms and spring barley varieties, bred in Siberia. The article presents the genetic formulas of hordeins (Hrd A.B.F) of 60 modern Siberian varieties, 14 varieties and promising samples of spring barley bred at the Krasnoyarsk Research Institute of Agriculture, their parental forms (16 samples), genetic formulas of local Siberian ancient forms (40 samples), as well as varieties released in Krasnoyarsk Territory (22 samples). Graphic forms and database reports included electrophoretic photographs of hordeins of spring barley varieties bred at Krasnoyarsk Research Institute of Agriculture and their parental forms, as well as local Krasnoyarsk barley forms. The database was featured with a button interface of forms for access to its main objects (reports, queries, tables) and the starting master form. Parametric queries allowed searching for samples by the genetic formula of hordeins and by the name of the variety. Also, the database provided a query to calculate the frequencies of alleles of hordein-coding loci among modern Siberian varieties. The researchers of the institute noted that the Access wizards are very convenient for keeping records since it allows exporting/importing tables from MS Excel and MS Word files. The capabilities of the Access DBMS were used to hide and display database objects to protect them and eliminate confusion in their search and selection.
