Abstract. The study, carried out in 2016–2019 in the Smolensk region, aimed to assess 23 samples of the world fiber flax gene pool and to identify sources of characteristics significant for breeding and genotypes that were adaptive to the agro-climatic conditions of the region. The content of phosphorus and potassium in the soil of the experimental plot was quite high (P2O5 – 213–239 mg/kg and K2O – 105–125 mg/kg of soil), the medium reaction was slightly acid (рН(KCl) – 5.0–5.3). Meteorological conditions were different over the years, but in terms of moisture supply, they generally met the requirements of the crop – the hydrothermal index for the vegetation period was 1.2–1.4. In terms of plant height and technical length of the stem, fiber flax cultivars China 1, J 52263 (China) and Belita (Belarus) significantly exceeded the standard. The increase, in relation to Impul’s variety, was 6.3–13.8 and 6.1–18.2%, respectively. Alfa variety (Russia) formed the high yield of flaxseeds (73 g/m2), which was 30.4% higher than the yield of the standard. In terms of flax straw yield, cultivars such as China 1, Andrea, Belita, and J 52263 exceeded the standard by 26.5–36.6%. The value of this trait in them on average over four years was 692–747 g/m2. Sinel’, Diplomat, Dobrynya, Surskij, Andrea, Nadezhda, Caesar, L.323-02 (Russia), Marylin (the Netherlands), Altea (France) formed a high fibre content in the stem – 31–37%, which was 7–11% higher than that of Impul’s variety (26%). At the same time, varieties Caesar, Surskij, Nadezhda, Andrea, Altea and breeding line L.323-02 also exceeded the standard in terms of long fibre yield, which amounted to 24.0–28.2%. Caesar, Dobrynya and Sinel’ which formed a high yield of flax fibre and turned out to be highly-adaptive to the conditions of the Central region of the Non-Chernozem zone of Russia were of particular breeding value.
