Abstract. In V.R. Williams Federal Scientific Centre of Forage Production and Agroecology, using the developed algorithm for distribution by statistical productivity groups, the results of three cycles of competitive variety testing of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) breeding numbers L-40, SGP-6, SGP-3 and BMS were analysed in comparison with the previously bred variety Smolensky 1 (originator – Federal Scientific Centre of Bast-Fiber Crops Breeding). The studies were carried out in 6 ecological environments in 2013–2018 under the agroclimatic conditions of the Moscow region on soddy-podzolic medium loamy soil by the method of organized repetitions. Each cycle of variety testing involved a different number of breeding numbers. That allowed to limit the use of previously developed methods. Two breeding numbers that had an unstable advantage over the standard were identified: L-40 and SGP-6. They were tested on the same number of media as the Smolensky 1. In most of the media statistically significant increases (0.57-4.40 t/ha) were observed compared to the productivity of the Smolensky 1 variety (5.06-10.59 t/ha), while in the rest of them these two breeding numbers were not inferior to him. In the aggregate of the media, these numbers did not differ significantly from each other in yield. However, the dynamics of their productivity relative to the standard in the gradation of media, that was characteristic of the agroclimatic conditions of the Non-Chernozem Region, was different. Under the conditions of a warm and humid growing season (sum of active temperatures – 2323 C, hydrothermal index – 1.6) on medium acid soil (рНKCl 4.9) the SGP-6 sample statistically significantly exceeded the standard in terms of productivity (5.06 t/ha) – the increase amounted to 0.57 t/ha. With a lack of heat (-598 С to the norm of the active temperatures sum of 2086 С) under optimal moistening conditions (HTC 1.3) in soil close to neutral (рНKCl 6.0), the advantage was with L-40 (an increase of 4.40 t/ha). According to the results of the state variety testing, they were included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements Approved for Use under the names Luch and Cheprasovsky.
