Abstract. With an increase in coal mining in the Novosibirsk region, the problems of restoring disturbed lands and assessing their suitability for human economic activity are becoming acute. The research aimed to assess the soil-ecological state of the anthracite deposits dumps surface. As its quantitative measure, we used the degree of correspondence between the properties of young soils and the parameters of the reference soil (leached chernozem). As study objects the work considers uneven-aged areas of filling with dense and soft rocks, as well as the dynamics of the formation of soil cover on their surface. The soils formed on the surface of the dump, according to the Classification of Soils of Technogenic Landscapes (2002), are classified as initial embryozems, organic-accumulative embryozems, and soddy embryozems. The correspondence between the parameters of young soils and of the reference soil increases in the course of evolutionary development from initial to soddy embryozems. The results of the assessment of the soil-ecological state vary from 25 to 87 points, depending on the stage of soil development and the properties of the substrate. In young areas initial embryozems predominated, middle-aged areas were characterised by an increase in the proportion of organo-accumulative embryozems, and soddy ones appeared in old areas. The evaluation of the ecological state of the soil for the areas of the dump surface was carried out as a weighted average, taking into account the scores of specific soil types and the share of the area occupied by them. Young plots were characterised by unsatisfactory soil-ecological state (29-34 points), old ones as satisfactory (38-48 points). The best soil-ecological state (85- 87 points) among the surveyed was characterised areas of dump with soft rocks.
