Abstract. The research aimed to study the effectiveness of use of a universal combined feeder. The work was carried out in the Stavropol Territory in 2021. To conduct the research based on the principle of pairs of analogues, three groups of ram hogs were formed at the age of four months, 10 animals each. Young stock was under identical conditions, but the animals were fed from feeders of different models. The smallest area was occupied by the universal combined feeder used for feeding lambs in the 3rd experimental group – 1.8 m2, which is 10% less than in the 2nd control group and 27% less than in the 1st control group. When using the universal combined feeder, it took less time on filling with feed and cleaning from residues. The palatability of roughage from the experimental feeder in the 3rd experimental group was 78.5%, in the 2nd and 1st control groups – 63.2% and 66.6%, respectively. The lowest losses of hay were observed in the 3rd experimental group – by 0.56 kg, or 5.6% less than in the 2nd control group and by 1.12 kg, or 11.2%, compared to the 1st control group. This advantage was due to the fact that the most nutritious fractions of hay (leaves, buds, inflorescences), shedding on a tray, were eaten by animals along with concentrated feed.
Keywords: feeder; rams; feeding; palatability; feed loss; time consumption.
