The results of the study of a new variety of variegated alfalfa Sudarynya

Abstract. The study aimed to assess the economic and biological characteristics and properties of the new alfalfa variety Sudarynya, its productivity and feed quality. The experiments were performed in 2017-2021 in the Rostov region. The new variety was compared with the Rostovskaya 90 standard in terms of the main morpho-biological characteristics, productivity and feed quality. The alfalfa variety Sudarynya is a complex hybrid population. It is identified as a result of selection and subsequent polycross in varieties Manychskaya and Resis. The new variety is classified as variegated alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. nothosubsp. varia (Martyn) Arcang), according to the approbation group, it is a common alfalfa. The productivity of herbage and dry matter during the years of competitive variety testing in the first and second cuts was higher than that of the Rostovskaya 90 standard in all years. The yield of herbage of the variety Sudarynya in the first cut was 22.5-35.6 t/ha, in the second – 12.9-17.1 t/ha, dry matter – 5.5-8.3 t/ha and 1-4.4 t/ha, respectively. In sum, for two cuts, the values of these indicators were equal to 46.1 t/ha and 11.4 t/ha, which is higher than the standard by 3.8 t/ha and 0.9 t/ha, respectively. The seed productivity of the Sudarynya variety was significantly higher (by 0.03-0.05 t/ha) than the standard for four years out of six recorded, and was at its level for two years. The average seed collection was 0.33 t/ha. A higher dry matter yield of the new variety, combined with an increased content of crude protein in dry matter (19.83%), compared with the standard (19.48%), provided an average of 2.21 t/ha of raw protein and 7476 fodder units/ha.
