Abstract. The studies aimed to improve the methodology for assessing the long-term effects of soil erosion in field experiments. The work was focused on assessing the reliability of the measurement results and was carried out in a long-term field experiment on contour-reclamation agriculture in the Kursk region. The experiment was started in 1982 on a slope in a short crop rotation. The soil was a typical medium-thick low-humus heavy loamy chernozem on loess-like loams (WRB – Haplic Chernozems). Two key areas were selected on the slope: one not subject to erosion (top of the slope), the other subject to erosion (bottom of the slope). The plots had the shape of a square with an area of 100 m2, divided into four identical units. For research in each unit in 2021, one soil sample was taken and a sample of measured values with a volume of n = 4 was formed. Density, moisture and absorbency of the soil, thickness of the humus horizon, and buckwheat yield were measured. Infiltration capacity was determined by sprinkling method. For all the studied values, the hypotheses of normal distribution and the reliability of the mean values were confirmed. For the error range corresponding to the standard deviation, it was reliably established that the thickness of the humus horizon of the eroded soil was 15 cm less than that of the non-eroded one. This happened approximately 240 years after the ploughing of virgin lands at an average rate of 0.6 mm/year. Differences between the mean values for the measured values were significant in 24% of cases.

Keywords: soil erosion; consequences; field experiments; measurements; reliability; humus.
