Summary. Dairy cattle breeding is one of the key sectors of agriculture, which for most agricultural producers permanent source of funds. Research on the state of the industry was carried out on materials of the Smolensk region, applied Economics and statistical techniques, particularly in grouping and econometric models. Milk production in the region for 2000-2012 years has considerably decreased (25%) by reducing the number of cows in 2.4 times. Simultaneously there was an increase animal productivity, but the pace is not possible to compensate for the reduced production as a result of disposal of livestock. Therefore, for increasing production volumes it is necessary to stabilize the number of cows and to find the possibility of its increase in the future. A significant number of milk producers in the region (about 45%) belong to private sector. They are characterized by low efficiency of milk production, because the level of their income does not allow to organize production on the modern level. In addition to small producers find it difficult to compete with larger markets for sales, resulting in lower selling prices do not allow them to recoup the cost of milk production. The analysis showed that the main directions of increase of efficiency of dairy cattle breeding are the enlarge of production, increasing productivity and the number of cows, reduce direct labor costs due to automation of production processes. This requires governmental support of the industry. The analysis of the needs of the Smolensk region in milk and milk products allows to conclude that the potential capacity of the market of milk provides industry opportunities of development.
