Summary. The content of heavy metals (HM) in arable soils of Republic of Mordovia was studied. The agricultural soil division in the region is based on the compact localization of the main soil types with similar genetics and agrochemical characteristics. We inspected four districts from five ones. The average regional background of Mn, Fe and Cr is less than bulk earth values by 5…10 %, of Zn, Ni and Cu – by 30…50 %, for Pb it is higher by 15 %, and for Co they are almost the same. The maximal content of gross forms of HM was detected in the first soil area for Pb, Zn, Cu, Mn and Cr, and in the fourth region – for Ni, Co and Fe. The minimal content of HM was detected in the fourth area for Cr and in the third area for Cu and Mn. Concentrations of Pb, Cu and Mn in soils significantly decreased from west to east from area I to area IV. According to the ratio of coefficients of the concentration of the chemical element of the region to its gross content in the Earth crust (RCc) these metals can be arranged in the decreasing series: Pb > Co > Fe = Cr > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu. The relative concentration coefficients (Capc8), which characterize the degree of regional contamination of soils, were calculated relative to APC (approximate permissible concentrations of the HM in soil), and as a result studied elements form the following decreasing series: Fe > Cr > Co > Pb = Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu. Total values of RCc8 of eight studied metals – MZc8 coincides with the sum of Capc of the HM at regions (Zcapc8): I> IV > III > II, and they are less than 16, which according to the scale of estimation of pollution of depositing mediums corresponds to the minimal pollution standard and testifies the low degree of anthropogenic impact on soils. We revealed element-markers, by the content of which it is possible to judge the concentration of other elements without their district determination. For the area I they are Pb, Cu, Ni and Cr; for area II they are Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn and Cr; for the area III - Co and Fe. In the area IV markers were not identified in connection with a low degree of conjugation of metals. The highest degree of the conjugation of metals is in the area II.
