Summary. Lotus corniculatus is a valuable hay and pasture legume crop. But at the same time it has biological features which should be considered during growing (weak resistance to shading during the first year of life, high cracking of beans at dry weather, weak competitiveness to weeds). To determine the best cover crop for the cultivation of lotus corniculatus for feed the experiments were carried out in 2010-2014 at the Udmurt Agricultural Research Institute. The soil of the experimental field was sod-podzol medium-loamy with low humus content and high content of mobile phosphorus and exchangeable potassium. The soil acidity was from medium acid to close to neutral. On average for four years of use in three replications the productivity of dry weight depending on the cover crop varied from 5.29 to 6.14 t/ha; the highest yield was obtained by bird's-foot planting without cover crop (control). With sowing under the cover of preceding crop the highest yield of dry matter of bird's-foot (5.67 t/ha) was noted at the variant with pea-oats mixture (by 0.32…0.38 t/ha higher). The productivity of coverless sowing of bird's-foot was provided by its density – 981 pcs/m2 at the first cutting and 1092 pcs/m2 at the second one. As a result of correlation analysis for variants of the experiment it was established a direct medium and strong relationship (r = 0.51…0.81) between the yield of dry matter of lotus corniculatus and its density at the first and second cut. Cultivation of lotus corniculatus provides the production of high quality forage with content of exchange energy per 1 kg of dry matter 9.37…10.31 MJ, crude protein – 19.3…25.3 %, feed units – 0.71…0.86.

Keywords: lotus corniculatus, cover crop, yield of dry mass, elements of yield structure, correlation, nutritional value.
