Summary. For the first time zein electrophoresis was used to analyze old local varieties and breeding lines of waxy corn, differing from other corn subspecies by 100 % amylopectin starch controlled by waxy (wx1) gene. Zein electrophoresis carried out in vertical 10% PAA gels with 8 M urea. The solution for zein extraction contained 6 M urea and 0.01 M dithiothreitol. The present research pursued the following aims: to use zein elecrophoretic patterns (protein markers) in screening local varieties and self-pollinated lines of the waxy corn subspecies for their identification and fingerprinting; to determine the biotype composition of old local varieties of the waxy corn subspecies and their polymorphism and degree of relationship; to demonstrate the possibility of applying zein markers in the development of new inbred lines of the waxy corn subspecies by backcrossing the wx1 gene into the initial line of the dent corn subspecies. Zein electrophoretic patterns showed the uniqueness of each sample of the waxy corn subspecies. Studied samples can be identified using specific marker components. The complete purity of a newly developed waxy line cannot be guaranteed even after the wx1 gene fourfold backcrossing. Therefore, the saturating crosses should be continued. All cultivars were found to be composed of several biotypes, their number ranging from two to five. Low-polymorphous variety K-20871 (China) and highly-polymorphous variety K-9991 (Primorsky Krai, Korean settlement) are close in biotype composition. Both biotypes of K-20871 are among the biotypes of K-9991, although they have different origin. Regardless of the intra-cultivar polymorphism, every variety possesses cultivar-specific patterns that allow its identification.
